Jewish history does not normally go hand-in-hand with gender studies but Professor Elisheva Baumgarten is successfully combining these two passions. Her research focuses on the Jewish medieval communities of Germany and northern France during the High Middle Ages, providing a comprehensive social and cultural history of marriage, family and daily life.
A graduate of Hebrew University’s Amirim Honors Program, Professor Baumgarten also earned her doctorate at The Hebrew University before going on to postdoctoral studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Today, Professor Baumgarten is an associate professor in the Faculty of Humanities’ Departments of Jewish History and History. Through her research, she feels that she is providing “a voice for Jewish women who have often been absent from the intellectual historical narrative.”
