Andrew J. Levander is a partner in the international law firm of Dechert LLP. He formerly served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and as an Assistant to the Solicitor General, and has been consistently recognized for excellence in the practice of law. Chambers USA, a referral guide to leading lawyers in the United States, has noted that Mr. Levander is “in the top league,” and “one of the brightest, most effective lawyers in New York.”
In addition, Mr. Levander was recognized as a top-tier attorney in the areas of securities shareholder litigation and white collar criminal defense in 2009 by The Legal 500 (U.S.), which noted that he is “one of the best lawyers in the country” and has “a well deserved national reputation.” He is also listed in The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Bet-the-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, White-Collar Criminal Defense, and Securities Law. He was named in March 2009 by The Lawyer as one of the 25 “Transatlantic Elite,” and was recognized as a top “bet-the-company” lawyer by Corporate Counsel.
Mr. Levander represents parties in securities fraud and commercial litigation and criminal and government investigations. His successful defense of Michael Rigas in the five-month Adelphia Communications criminal jury trial in 2004 was profiled in both the National Law Journal and the New York Law Journal. He currently represents such high profile clients as Lehman Brothers’ outside directors and John Thain, former CEO of Merrill Lynch. Mr. Levander is also leading the defense of investment manager J. Ezra Merkin in the Madoff scandal. Mr. Levander has advised many of the leading financial institutions or their affiliates, including AIG, Bank of NY, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, NYSE, UBS, and Universal American Corp. In addition, he has defended many public companies, including GlaxoSmithKline, Monster Worldwide, and Motorola.
Mr. Levander has written extensively on legal issues, including co-authoring two legal treatises, and taught trial practice at New York University for many years. He has also lectured at Columbia, Georgetown, the ABA White Collar Crime Institute, SIFMA, the Practising Law Institute, and various bar associations and government agencies. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Summer on the Hill program for indigent children in New York City, and is an active congregant at the Congregation Rodeph Sholom. Andy and his wife Carol Loewenson, a practicing architect, live in New York City with their sons, Sam, age 21 and Ben, age 17.
