On September 28, 2004, American Friends gathered at New York City's St. Regis Hotel for a National Scopus Award Dinner honoring Daniel J. Schultz. A longtime supporter of The Hebrew University, Danny serves on AFHU's national board as Assistant Treasurer and sits on the investment committee of the AFHU endowment fund. He is also a trustee of the University along with his wife, Jennifer.
As a Managing Director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson Gotham Ventures, a premier early-stage information technology venture capital fund, Danny Schultz helps in the development of Israel's rapidly growing high-tech sector. The Hebrew University is responsible for 40 percent of Israel's research and this Scopus Award dinner served as an opportunity to raise essential funds for Hebrew University''s scientific infrastructure.
In his acceptance remarks, Danny underscored the importance of these goals, stating:
"We must all be involved in the work of improving our world and I hope one of the paths to which we all channel our efforts is toward this great institution ... tonight's dinner fundraising is earmarked for the purchase of advanced equipment and establishment of facilities at the Hebrew University to find, attract, retain and inspire new faculty - new heroes - to the science and technology discipline."
Guests were treated to a glimpse into Hebrew University progress in one of the most exciting fields of science - nanotechnology. Professor Uri Banin, head of the University's Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, described how this research can benefit society by leading the way to revolutions from alternative energy sources to novel drug delivery systems. He thanked AFHU for having "identified and targeted a great cause supporting a new generation of young hi-tech faculty to make ever brighter sparks emanate from Jerusalem."
Harvey M. Krueger, former chairman of AFHU's national board and current co-chair of the International Campaign, served as master of ceremonies and presented the Scopus Award. The Honorable Daniel Ayalon, Israel's ambassador to the United States, gave the keynote address; and Moshe Vigdor, Vice President and Director General of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem welcomed guests and offered congratulations on behalf of the University. The event was chaired by Harvey Krueger, vice chairman of Lehman Brothers; Timothy Draper, founder and managing director of Draper Fisher Jurvetson; and Kobi Alexander, chairman and CEO of Converse Technology and an alumnus of The Hebrew University.
