HaTikvah: The Hope and its Discontents

Professor Edwin Seroussi from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Department of Musicology and Director of the Jewish Music Research Center presented HaTikvah: The Hope and its Discontents, hosted by the Oakland Temple Sinai. Prof. Seroussi led listeners on a journey in time from the source, to the creation, to the contested reception of the modern Hebrew song HaTikvah. Once the anthem of the Zionist movement and, now the national anthem of the State of Israel, the journey revealed the early Zionist movement’s creative drive and haphazard experimental character history, and the difficulties inherent in choosing a symbol for a modern nation-state.
