In addition to the wonderful program planned at the Hebrew University Board of Governors, AFHU has arranged for a special excursion on Saturday, June 9, to several well-known battlegrounds on the road to Jerusalem with Ambassador Carmi Gillon, former Head of the Shin Bet and former Vice President of the Hebrew University.

Shifting Memories and the Road to Jerusalem

1947 – 1967 – 2017

9:00 am               Depart hotel.

9:30 am                Stop at the Khan at Shaar HaGai – Bab El Wad (The Gateway of the Valley) for a close look and understanding why this site was so significant during the battle for the control of the Road to Jerusalem during the 1947 War of Independence.  Read poetry written at the time to mark the importance of the place.

10:15 am               Follow in the path of the Burma Road, constructed bypass created during Israel’s War of Independence in the course of the battle for Jerusalem, which was under siege at the time. Stop at the Portsei ha-Derekh li-Yerushalaim Memorial Monument to pay your respect to the ones who fought for the way to Jerusalem.

11:15am                 Drive to Har Adar, site of the British era radar hill, where significant battles were fought in 1947 and 1967 and which today is located on the Seam Zone between Israel and the Palestinian Authority – explore its significance to Jerusalem 70 years ago, 50 years ago and today, concluding with music and thoughts from the days of the War of Independence.

12:30pm               Arrive to Naurah a local restaurant for lunch, located in the pastoral wadi of Abu Gosh.

2:30pm                 Visit the Abu Gosh Crusader Monastery, where will see the Crusader Church with original Frescos that are still in great shape to this day, and the amazing garden outside the building.

3:00 pm              Depart Abu Gosh for Jerusalem

4:00 pm               Arrive back to the King David hotel
