On May 21, 2019, AFHU’s Northeast Region honored Mark A. Kirsch, a leading member of New York’s legal community at a luncheon held at Cipriani in New York City. Mr. Kirsch, a longstanding member of AFHU’s Northeast Region board, received the 49th George A. Katz Torch of Learning Award in recognition of his professional achievements and civic and Jewish communal leadership.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and foreign affairs expert, Bret Stephens, was the event’s featured speaker. Mr. Stephens said, “Israel was able to do something important; it brought together rationality with tradition and history. That is the essence of what is done in Law and that’s also the achievement of the Hebrew University.” Among the special guests were Professor Daphna Lewinsohn-Zamir, Dean of the Hebrew University Faculty of Law, who described the law school’s essential role within Israel and the effective pro bono work of its legal education clinics.

The event’s co-chairs were: Matthew L. Biben, Mark S. Cohen, Daniel J. Fetterman, Meredith Jackson, Randy M. Mastro, Sean F. O’Shea, Richard O’Toole, and Orin Snyder. Funds raised benefited the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law and AFHU.
