“There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people,
raises them up as leaders, and continually develops them.” – John C. Maxwell

It is this idea of recruiting for the future, of developing leaders and learners, that prompted the American Friends of the Hebrew University (AFHU) to create the Leadership Empowerment and Development (LEAD) initiative. AFHU LEAD identifies, cultivates, and mentors the next generation of leaders in furtherance of AFHU’s mission in support of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. AFHU is proud to announce the third cohort of the LEAD program and has formally welcomed twelve new members to the AFHU family.

On January 17, 2025, in conjunction with the AFHU board of directors weekend, LEAD Cohort III members gathered in Palm Beach, Florida, for their inaugural meeting. Participants joined in activities and presentations that focused on the university’s interdisciplinary approach to humanities, technology, and medicine. LEAD members participated in one-on-one sessions with Dr. Daniel Sobelman, Assistant Professor of International Relations, and Professor Uzi Rebhun, the Shlomo Argov Chair in Israel–Diaspora Relations and Head of the Division of Jewish Demography and Statistics at the A. Harman Research Institute of Contemporary Jewry. They heard from Professor Asher Cohen, President of the Hebrew University, and Joshua Rednik, AFHU CEO. They also enjoyed conversations with Daniel and Marcy Schlessinger, Chairman (and first lady) of the Hebrew University Board of Governors.

The LEAD participants, men, and women ranging in age from their early thirties to their mid-fifties, are a diverse group from across the United States. “We are proud to welcome the third cohort of LEAD members,” said AFHU LEAD Chair David Donenberg. “LEAD graduates and members are key to the success of AFHU, and we are committed to growing and perpetuating the legacy of support and innovation for the Hebrew University,” he added.

Training for each LEAD cohort consists of three US-based sessions featuring leadership training, educational seminars, networking, and social opportunities. In addition, a week-long trip to Israel, hosted by the Hebrew University, provides an on-site look at the innovative spirit found at the heart of the Hebrew University. LEAD webinars offer exclusive access to Hebrew University’s research breakthroughs and cutting-edge technologies while mentoring and networking opportunities with AFHU and HU leaders provide unique access to these influential individuals

LEAD Cohort III members will gather again in Jerusalem this summer as they participate in the 2025 Hebrew University Centennial Board of Governors. AFHU and HU look forward to their continued growth and education as they become committed leaders and supporters of the university.
