June 15, 2023 –The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) presented humanitarian, philanthropist, and businessman Arthur Gutterman with a prestigious Honorary Doctorate degree during the 86th Board of Governors Meeting on June 12th in Jerusalem, Israel.  

Mr. Gutterman is the Chairman of Jelmar, LLC, a cleaning products company.  

A longtime supporter of HU and the American Friends of the Hebrew University, (AFHU) Mr. Gutterman established the HU Emalie Gutterman Endowed Fund for Medical Research in memory of his wife, and the Arthur Gutterman Family Chair in Stem Cell Biology Endowment Fund. He also serves on the Hebrew University’s Board of Governors, Executive Committee, AFHU’s National Board and National Campaign Committee, and the Southeast Region’s Advisory Committee. Mr. Gutterman was inscribed on the Hebrew University’s Wall of Benefactors in 2013. 

At the ceremony, HU President Professor Asher Cohen conferred upon Mr. Gutterman the degree of Doctor Philosophiae Honoris Causa, “with gratitude for his steadfast commitment to a vibrant global Jewish community and a safe and prosperous Israel; in recognition of his and his family’s commitment to Holocaust education in South Florida; and in tribute to his and his family’s long-time and multi-faceted relationship with the Hebrew University.”  

Acknowledging the accolade, Mr. Gutterman said, “AFHU and HU have given me the opportunity to broaden my horizons and expand my knowledge. I have enjoyed being involved with such a strong group of scholars and diverse group of individuals over these many years.”  

A longtime resident of Boca Raton, Florida, Mr. Gutterman has generously supported the Arthur and Emalie Gutterman Family Center for Holocaust and Human Rights Education at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), which serves K-12 educators and recognizes their achievements through FAU’s Gutterman Family Exemplary Holocaust Educators Award.  

He also supports charities across the United States, including the Salvation Army, Greater Chicago Food Depository, American Transplant Association, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Jewish National Fund, Hadassah, and Hillel International.  

Mr. Gutterman received his Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Marketing from Roosevelt University in Chicago.
