The National Scopus Award is the highest honor the American Friends of the Hebrew University can confer. Named for Mount Scopus in Jerusalem, where the Hebrew University’s first cornerstones were laid in 1918, the Award has come to symbolize the university’s highest ideals of achievement and leadership. In addition to being the original home of the Hebrew University, its Mount Scopus campus represents the long struggle faced by Israel and the nation’s ultimate victory in reunifying the city of Jerusalem.

AFHU’s Scopus Award is bestowed upon individuals who demonstrate humanitarian concerns throughout their careers. Recipients are distinguished by their commitment to Israel and the Jewish people, their concern to achieve peaceful coexistence among people and nations, and their work on behalf of important causes locally, nationally, and internationally.
