Uncover Ancient History

Explore history with Hebrew university's institute of archaeology.

Uncover the past, shape the future.

At the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU), archaeologists are working tirelessly to decipher the secrets of history. Why? Because we know that the past has the power to illuminate the future.

Professor Leore Grosman, Head of the Prehistoric Archaeology Department and the Computational Archaeology Laboratory at the Hebrew University takes a modern, hi-tech approach to revealing the past. Prof. Grosman conducts research that seeks to uncover the history of the transition from hunting and gathering to farming, a transition that changed the course of human existence. The Computational Archaeology Laboratory, founded by Prof. Grosman in 2010, focuses on the development of mathematical and computational tools specifically designed to address archaeological questions.

Prof. Grosman is one of many pioneering archaeological researchers at HU. The Hebrew University’s Institute of Archaeology was founded in 1934 as the Department of Archaeology and in 1967, it became the Institute of Archaeology. Today, the Institute is an independent research and teaching unit within the Faculty of Humanities, with a staff that provides administrative and scientific assistance as well as the technical facilities necessary to carry out its research projects.

HU’s archaeological research discoveries, including those from ancient Jerusalem and Judah, have sparked worldwide interest. The cultural landscapes of Jerusalem and the ancient civilizations of Judah are historically significant, primarily due to their prominence in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

The region has been explored by numerous scholars specializing in different fields, such as history, biblical studies, Second Temple Judaism, early Christianity, Islam, and ancient art. These interdisciplinary approaches in archaeology have played a special role in academic research and groundbreaking expeditions and excavations, which have enabled researchers to develop concrete reconstructions of the past realities of ancient cultures. These collaborative historical conservation, restoration, and preservation projects are just the beginning of HU’s journey to uncover the past.
