Torch of Learning 2016

As our 2016 Jerold S. Solovy Torch of Learning dinner comes to a close, we wanted to thank all participants and attendees for making the event so successful. We are thrilled to report that the event generated over $320,000 in funds for the Hebrew University Faculty of Law’s Clinical Legal Education Center (CLEC), providing free and accessible representation to residents of Jerusalem who need its support.

David H. Hoffman of Sidley Austin LLP was the recipient of the 2016 Award, in recognition of his commitment to social justice, his support for Israel, and his profound impact on the city of Chicago. David was supported by a myriad of family members and colleagues during the evening.

Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Yuval Shany, the Hersch Lauterpacht Chair in International Law at the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law, and member of the UN Human Rights Committee. Shany discussed Israel’s diversity and perseverance.

Guests were also fortunate to hear from the newly appointed Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, Aviv Ezra – a Hebrew University alum. Consul General Ezra discussed the legacy of Shimon Peres, z”l, and his impact on the world. The crowd welcomed Aviv and his family to Chicago.

Later in the evening, the honoree himself took the podium to address the legacy of the late Jerry Solovy – after whom the award is named – as well as his connection to Israel and community. David articulated the importance of education and communal values, which stemmed from his grandfather’s influence.

While the event is over, there is still an opportunity to contribute towards the funding of Hebrew University’s Clinical Legal Education Center.
