American Friends of the Hebrew University Mid-Atlantic Region Commemorates 100 Years of Global Innovation and the Next Generation of Visionaries

December 19, 2025 – American Friends of the Hebrew University’s (AFHU) Mid-Atlantic Region commemorated the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s (HU) 100th anniversary on December 15, 2025, with a celebration recognizing regional benefactors and spotlighting the next generation of innovators poised to shape the institution’s second century.

CNN Anchor Wolf Blitzer—an alumnus of HU’s Rothberg International School (RIS)—served as Master of Ceremonies for the event, held at a private club in Washington, DC.

Tonight, we honor the AFHU Mid-Atlantic Region supporters, alumni, and friends whose vision and generosity have elevated Hebrew University as Israel’s premier academic institution for the past century,” said William (Bill) J. Kilberg, President of AFHU’s Mid-Atlantic Region, and a member of both AFHU’s Board and HU’s Board of Governors. “Their leadership ensures that Hebrew University will continue educating the scholars, innovators, and leaders who will shape Israel and the world for generations to come.”

Honorees included: Jim Blum; Dr. Nathan Bluzer; Susie & Michael Gelman; The Theodore and Annette Lerner Family Foundation / Lerner, Tanenbaum and Cohen Families; Joseph & Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds; Robert I. Schattner Foundation; Sheryl & Bradley Schwartz; and David Bruce Smith.

The evening featured remarks from Tal Naim Cohen, Spokesperson for the Embassy of Israel to the United States, followed by a forward-looking discussion, “The Next 100 Years at Hebrew University.” Panelists included Ambassador (Ret.) Yossi Gal, HU Vice President for Advancement and External Relations; Prof. Sheera Adar of the Faculty of Medicine; and Prof. Katrina Ligett, Director of the Federmann Center for the Study of Rationality.

AFHU Mid-Atlantic Region Board member Prof. Gary Kupfer, MD, of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Dr. Louis Weiner, Director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, also announced a new research collaboration between Hebrew University and Georgetown University aimed at advancing cancer research and accelerating scientific breakthroughs.
