Alumni and Friends: Connecting Through Stories

On February 19, 2026, American Friends of the Hebrew University (AFHU) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU) welcomed guests for an inspiring evening celebrating literature, partnership, and the enduring power of storytelling. The event, Connecting Through Stories, featured award-winning Israeli author and Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HU) alumna Noa Yedlin and brought together community members, supporters, and academic leaders for a meaningful cultural exchange. The event was chaired by dedicated AFHU and FAU supporters Arthur Gutterman, Ellen Klersfeld Hechtman, and Tina and Michael Lobel.

Noa Yedlin, recipient of the prestigious Sapir Prize and the Prime Minister’s Literature Award, is the author of bestselling novels including House Arrest, Stockholm, People Like Us, and The Wrong Book. During the program, Yedlin reflected on her journey at the Hebrew University, including her residency at HU’s Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS). Speaking about her experience, she shared that the “IIAS is a place where we can pose question marks when we’re surrounded by exclamation points.”

Yedlin also spoke candidly about the role of literature in a post–October 7th world. Her thoughtful and nuanced remarks explored the responsibility of writers during times of upheaval and the ways storytelling can deepen understanding and resilience. She noted that “literature can ease loneliness” and reflected that she believes “humor is a manifestation of the soul.”

The evening served as a powerful reminder that stories have the ability to bridge communities, illuminate complex realities, and strengthen the bonds between institutions dedicated to knowledge, dialogue, and human progress. By bringing notable Hebrew University alumni to communities across the United States, AFHU continues to deepen alumni engagement and strengthen the University’s presence and impact nationwide.
