Innovation and Insight: A Conversation on Technological Progress

On March 4, 2026, American Friends of the Hebrew University (AFHU) Midwest Region welcomed guests in Chicago and online for an engaging session focused on innovation, economic history, and the forces shaping modern technology. The event brought together venture capitalists, corporate lawyers, wealth managers, and early-stage investors active in the Israeli technology sector for a thoughtful discussion and networking gathering. The session featured 2025 Nobel Memorial Prize co-winner in Economic Sciences, Professor Joel Mokyr, in conversation with Robert (Bobby) Gerber, managing partner of Neal, Gerber, & Eisenberg and President of the Midwest Region Board, creating a lively exchange on how technological progress fuels innovation and economic growth.

Professor Mokyr, a renowned economic historian known for his work on the history of technological change, shared insights on how societies cultivate innovation over time. In conversation with Mr. Gerber, he explored the historical conditions that allow new technologies to flourish, emphasizing the importance of institutions, open inquiry, and the exchange of ideas. Reflecting on the long arc of technological advancement, Professor Mokyr noted that breakthroughs rarely occur in isolation but instead emerge from ecosystems where knowledge circulates freely, and ambitious thinkers are willing to challenge established norms.

During the conversation, Professor Mokyr also reflected on his formative years studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, recalling how the intellectual environment and mentorship he encountered there helped shape the trajectory of his academic career. He spoke about the influence of his professors and the vibrant community of fellow students who challenged one another through debate, curiosity, and rigorous scholarship. Professor Mokyr emphasized that those early academic experiences instilled in him a lifelong commitment to exploring how ideas evolve—principles that would later define his work as one of the leading historians of technological progress.

The session provided attendees with an opportunity to connect across industries while reflecting on the broader forces shaping the future of technology. By convening leaders from finance, law, and venture capital alongside scholars and supporters, AFHU continues to foster meaningful dialogue around innovation, knowledge, and the global impact of Israeli academia and research.
