A Treasure from Antiquity: The Ten Commandments Tablet

On December 17, 2024, AFHU’s Northeast Region Board and their guests gathered at Sotheby’s New York office to learn about the history and artistry behind its Important Judaica: Featuring Celebrated Manuscripts from the Collections of David Solomon Sassoon and the Montefiore Endowment auction and see the Ten Commandments Tablet (ca. 300–800 CE), the earliest surviving inscribed tablet of the Ten Commandments, incised during the late Roman-Byzantine era. It is the only complete example of a Ten Commandments table from this early period. Northeast Region Board President Dr. Jeffrey Kuvin offered opening remarks on Jewish resilience and the importance of stewarding ancient artifacts. Sotheby’s Judaica expert and HU alumnus Shaul Seidler-Feller led the meaningful tour, which resonated deeply with board members as AFHU and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem celebrate their joint centennial year in 2025, marking 100 years of history of perseverance, resilience, and strength. It was a meaningful and inspirational evening where guests learned more about this special artifact representing a bridge between faith and time.
