May 6, 2025 – The Hebrew University of Jerusalem proudly announces that Professor Sergiu Hart has been elected as an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS), one of the highest honors in the global scientific community.

The NAS, established in 1863, recognizes distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Election to the Academy is considered a hallmark of scientific excellence. Only a select number of international members are elected each year—scientists and scholars from outside the United States whose work has had a transformative global impact.

Professor Hart, a renowned scholar in game theory, economic theory, and mathematics, is affiliated with the Bogen Family Department of Economics and the Einstein Institute of Mathematics at the Hebrew University. He is the founding director of the multidisciplinary Center for the Study of Rationality, and his groundbreaking work has reshaped understandings of strategic decision-making, equilibrium behavior, and adaptive processes in economics and beyond.

Throughout his career, Professor Hart has received numerous accolades, including the Israel Prize in Economics and Statistics (2018) and the Rothschild Prize in the Social Sciences (1998).

Professor Tamir Sheafer, Rector of the Hebrew University, commented, “Professor Hart has made a lasting impact on how we understand strategic behavior and decision-making—across economics, mathematics, and beyond. His work exemplifies the rare fusion of mathematical rigor and conceptual innovation. This recognition by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences is not only a personal honor, but also a testament to the caliber of research emerging from Hebrew University and Israeli academia more broadly.”

AFHU joins the Hebrew University in extending its warmest congratulations to Professor Hart on this remarkable achievement, which honors both his individual contributions and the continued international standing of Israeli academia.
