NEW YORK, May 13, 2014 — American Friends of The Hebrew University (AFHU) announced today that Arthur Gutterman of Highland Park, Illinois, and Boca Raton, Florida, will receive an Honorary Fellowship on June 9, 2014, during The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s 77th International Board of Governors Meeting.
Mr. Gutterman, a prominent businessman and philanthropist, has maintained a longstanding commitment to Israel and to The Hebrew University, and is engaged in Jewish communal life and myriad charitable causes. He is an Associate Governor and Benefactor of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and has helped to propel the mission of AFHU as a member of its national board. He is dedicated to enabling future generations of students to pursue higher education and has supported vital medical research. These philanthropic values were shared by his beloved late wife Emalie (z”l). In tribute to Emalie, Mr. Gutterman established the Emalie Gutterman Endowed Fund for Medical Research at The Hebrew University.
“Arthur Gutterman’s devotion to Israel, the Jewish community and The Hebrew University of Jerusalem serves as inspiration,” said AFHU National President, Daniel I. Schlessinger. “Arthur has a strong desire to give back. He embodies broad-based philanthropy through transformative gifts and contributes to the well-being of Israel’s students and to the advancement of cutting-edge medical research.”
A successful entrepreneur, Arthur Gutterman is chairman of Jelmar, LLC, a Chicago-based manufacturer of household cleaning products. He has been instrumental in creating, developing and introducing new consumer products to the retail market through drugstore chains, super markets, hardware stores and mass merchants.
Deeply attuned to the importance of providing students with educational opportunity at the highest levels, Emalie and Arthur established the Emalie and Arthur Endowed Scholarship at Roosevelt University in Chicago, where Mr. Gutterman earned his bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Marketing. Additionally, Arthur created the Gutterman Family Exemplary Holocaust Educators Award at Florida Atlantic University.
Among the many organizations Mr. Gutterman supports are the Salvation Army, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the American Transplant Association, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
Arthur is the father of Alison Gutterman, who is president of Jelmar, LLC and an AFHU Leader of Distinction honoree, and Jamie Gutterman Dann. He is the proud grandfather of four.
The Hebrew University’s 77th Board of Governors Meeting will commence on Friday June 6, 2014 and end on Thursday June 12, 2014.
