Stated Ike Sorkin, who became Chairman of AFHU's national board this April: "One of my proudest achievements as president was to invite George to become involved in AFHU. His common sense, intelligence, decency and work ethic will serve this organization in the best sense of the word."

George Schieren, a partner at the law firm of Clifford Chance in New York, specializes in securities litigation and regulatory enforcement proceedings. He has more than two decades of experience in the areas of securities regulation and corporate governance. Previously, he served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith, the largest broker-dealer in the United States, and as Senior Vice President and Associate General Counsel of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc.

George launched his prominent legal career in the New York Regional Office of the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he served as chief of branch enforcement and assistant regional administrator. A graduate of Queens College, he received his Juris Doctorate cum laude from Brooklyn Law School in 1974. He frequently speaks on securities law and broker-dealer issues at Practicing Law Institute, the American Bar Association and Securities Industry Association programs.

George and his wife Ellen live in Hewlett Harbor, New York, and have two adult children. As a family, the Schierens visited The Hebrew University for the first time in June of 2000, an experience which made a strong, positive impact. George and Ellen, who have many philanthropic interests, achieved Guardian status at The Hebrew University and are inscribed on the Wall of Life.  AFHU's new president is a member of the university's Board of Governors and participates on the Executive Committee.

In 2001, George Schieren was honored by his peers at AFHU's 32nd Annual George A. Katz Lawyer's Luncheon, where he received the George A. Katz Torch of Learning Award for his leadership, service and philanthropy.
