Five Nobel Prizes in Four Years: HU Professor is 2005 Nobelist in Economics Robert J. Aumann, professor emeritus at Hebrew University's Center for Rationality and a faculty member for five decades, was awarded the 2005 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for his groundbreaking work in the field of game theory.   This achievement marks the fifth time in four years that a Hebrew University alumnus or faculty member has won a Nobel Prize in the sciences.

Hebrew University Ranked #1 Among Israeli Universities
In 2005, Israel’s Council for Higher Education ranked The Hebrew University of Jerusalem as the nation’s #1 institution on a scale of "academic excellence." The Hebrew University was also cited as leading in the number of competitive research grants received.

$5.6 Million Research Grant for Fighting Bioterrorism
Prof. Raymond Kaempfer of the Faculty of Medicine was awarded a $5.6 million research grant from the U.S. National Institutes of Health for his work in developing methods to combat bioterrorism.   This is the largest grant ever given by the NIH to an Israeli researcher, and will foster investigations of specialized proteins that work to protect the human body from deadly toxic agents.

Researchers Reveal How New Drugs Help to Halt Alzheimers
The mechanism in anti-Alzheimer’s disease drugs that inhibits the production of a destructive, inflammation-causing protein in the brain was revealed by a joint team of scientists from the Department of Psychology and the Faculty of Medicine. The discovery points the way toward new forms of disease treatment and prevention.

Black-and-White Films Get New Life in Color
New technology developed at the Benin School of Computer Science and Engineering promises to make color conversion of black-and-white film faster and less labor-intensive. This innovation enables technicians to colorize a monochrome image with computer software that automatically fills entire sections of film frames.

Historic Find in East Jerusalem
Dr. Eilat Mazar, a visiting scholar at HU’s Institute of Archaeology, discovered what she believes to be the ruins of King David’s fabled palace in East Jerusalem. Pottery found at the site has been dated to the 10th century B.C.E, the time of David and Solomon.

Pollution Study Unites Israeli and Palestinian Researchers
In a unique cooperative project, Hebrew University scientists are working closely with engineers from the Palestinian Meteorological Service to collect air pollution data from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The project is a positive step towards improved management of shared air resources in the region.

"Super Strong" Spider Web Material Pioneered with Commercial Applications Collaborating with researchers from Oxford and Munich Universities, members of HU’s Department of Cell and Animal Biology pioneered a process that uses a spider’s genetic material to create durable web material with diverse applications from optical fibers to bullet-proof vests.

Targeting Cancer Tumors -- One Cell at a Time
The biotechnology company BioCancell is developing a revolutionary cancer therapy based on the research of Prof. Avraham Hochberg, a biochemist at the Silberman Institute of Life Sciences. Prof. Hochberg has developed a way to eradicate individual cancer cells by using the potent diphtheria toxin.
