On June 18, Alumni and Friends of The Hebrew University gathered at the gallery of artist Oded Halahmy for a "Welcome to Summer" evening, the first in a series of New York events organized to raise scholarship funds for deserving HU students.
Guests were treated to cocktails, dinner, and music--all against the backdrop of Oded Halahmy's gallery featuring beautiful sculptures designed throughout his celebrated 40 year career. Mr. Halahmy himself, an Iraqi Jew born in Baghdad, immigrated to Israel as a young man and continues to devote himself to the causes of Israel and The Hebrew University.
The evening began with musical selections by flautist and HU alumnus Mattan Klein and was followed by opening remarks by Joshua Olshin, a fellow Hebrew University alumnus and a member of the AFHU Board of Directors.
Olshin reminded attendees of the evening’s purpose--helping to ensure that talented students are given the opportunity to succeed at Hebrew University even in the face of economic limitations.
"We are here to support this critical endeavor," he said. “Two thirds of all students require some form of financial assistance from the University.” |

The centerpiece of the evening was HU Student Ambassador Orit Cohen, who addressed the group after dinner from her unique perspective as a student at the university. Orit, who is in her second year as a Psychology and Communications double major, has been traveling around the United States offering American Friends a first hand account about her life and studies at The Hebrew University--and just how much AFHU Scholarships can do.
"It's not just a place to learn. It’s a wonderful place, it's a place for personal growth," Orit said.
