Midwest Region Board of Directors Meeting May 2004

AFHU's Midwest Region Board of Directors meeting was held on May 12, 2004 at the Standard Club in Chicago. David Rubin, president of the Chicago Chapter, announced that Todd Lundy, a member of AFHU's National Board and recent Scopus Award honoree, was elected co-chair of AFHU's National Executive Committee. It was further announced that Steve Landes and Rick Hoffman, an HU alum, attorneys at Wildman Harrold, would speak at the Lawyers Committee Lunch and Learn on July 15th.

Board members heard from AFHU Executive Vice President Peter Willner, who discussed the new culture of the "openness of ideas" at American Friends, where lay leaders and professional staff have formed strong partnerships in order to promote the well being of Israel’s premiere institution of higher learning and research.

Midwest Region board members heard from special guest speaker, Hebrew University Vice President Avi Armoni. VP Armoni discuss the international network of Friends organizations, stressing their many forms of commitment to Hebrew University, a world-class institution of higher learning and research. He reported that 40% of all research in Israel is conducted by the university; much of this research is in the vital field of biotechnology. The university also receives 35% of all competitive grants awarded in Israel. As a result of this productivity, the university earned $32 million in patent income during the previous year, and is projected to earn about $42 million cumulatively in 2004.
