Stem Cell Research: Scientific Breakthroughs
and Ethical Challenges
Presented by Dr. Eran Meshorer and Professor David Heyd |
Eran Meshorer completed his Ph.D. at the Department of Biochemistry, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he studied long-term molecular and cellular consequences of psychological stress in the mammalian brain. He then moved to the National Cancer Institute, at the National Institues of Health, to study chromatin structure and dynamics in embryonic stem cells, using advanced-microscopy and imaging methods. Dr. Meshorer is in the process of setting up his own lab at The Hebrew University in the Department of Genetics, where he will pursue his interest in embryonic stem cell research, as well as neuronal stem cells and neuronal embryonic stem cell differentiation.

David Heyd, the Chaim Perelman Professor of Philosophy at The Hebrew University, is a prominent moral and political philosopher who combines a broad humanistic sensibility with analytic skill. He is the author of Supererogation: Its Status in Ethical Theory and editor of Toleration: An Elusive Virtue. His recent research projects include the role of chance and luck in ethics and politics, global justice, and our moral obligations to future generations. Heyd is a distinguished bioethicist, and author of Genethics: Moral Issues in the Creation of People. Currently, he is a Senior Visiting Scholar in the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health.

Guy Stroumsa, the Martin Buber Professor of Comparative Religion at The
Hebrew University of Jerusalem, received his B.A. from The Hebrew
University of Jerusalem, his M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University and an
honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich. He is currently a Fellow
in the Program of Hellenic Studies at Princeton University. He was previously
a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies at The Hebrew University and
at Dumbarton Oaks, and a visiting professor at the College de France and various
European and North American universities.

Sarah Stroumsa, the Alice and Jack Ormut Professor of Arabic Studies on the Faculty of Humanities at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, graduated (cum laude) with a B.A. in Arabic Language and Literature and Middle Eastern Studies from The Hebrew University in 1977. She also received her Ph.D. (with distinction) from the university in 1984. Professor Stroumsa served as Vice-Rector of HU from 2003-2006, and is currently a Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in the Center for Advanced Judaic Studies. |
