Two decades ago, the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine, the only academic and research center of its kind in Israel, was established to fulfill the nation's need for professionals who could do the following: • Administer quality care for large and small animals; • Ensure the nation's food safety and health; • Spearhead medical research vital to animals and to people.
Today, Hebrew University's Koret School remains Israel's foremost training round for those seeking to practice modern veterinary medicine. Board-certified Hebrew University experts in fields ranging from surgery to cardiology treat animals and participate in educating new generations of veterinarians.
Medical research, often undertaken in collaboration with HU's Faculty of Medicine, focuses on infectious and parasitic diseases, a continuing health threat in many parts of the world. Important research is also conducted on eye diseases such as glaucoma, in aspects of oncology and on diseases transmitted from animals to man, such as rabies and mad cow disease. In addition, the Koret School extends humanitarian and educational assistance to developing nations and to other countries in the Middle East.
In Fall 2005, a new teaching and research facility, shown above, was dedicated on the Rehovot campus. An affiliated teaching hospital is located at Beit Dagan, on the campus of Israel's Ministry of Agriculture in Rishon Le Zion.
At the Beit Degan hospital, shown at right, students receive their practical clinical training and fulfill rotations in varied medical specialties. People bring their pets from throughout the country for the nation's finest care. An emergency room operates "24/7." A rehabilitation unit helps animals recovering from medical conditions and procedures.
Graduates of the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine are much in demand. They employed in industry and attain leading positions at Israel's ministries. The Koret School is a resource for all of Israel, offering continuing education in veterinary medicine, allowing current practitioners and new immigrant veterinarians to achieve high standards of proficiency. Courses are offered to horse owners and breeders as well.
The Koret School participates in many international organizations and has a facultyexchange program with the University of California, Davis. HU faculty maintain close ties with other leading U.S. institutions including the University of Pennsylvania, Ohio State, Tufts, Purdue, and Cornell.
