Mid-Atlantic Region Hosts Cadets for Public Service
On September 11, 2005, AFHU’s Mid-Atlantic Region hosted a welcome brunch for 29 students involved in Cadets for Public Service, a unique academic program within Hebrew University’s School of Public Policy designed to integrate promising HU students into Israel’s civil services. Graciously held at the home of Nancy and Paul Hamburger, the brunch presented American Friends in the Washington D.C area with the opportunity to meet some of the Hebrew University’s most outstanding young scholars. The cadets, who are making stops in Atlanta, Cleveland, Columbus and New York, traveled to the United States for a first-hand look at American government, business, and Jewish communal organizations.
Conducted in partnership with Israel’s Ministry of Finance and Civil Service Commission, as well as not-for-profit organizations including the Jewish Agency for Israel and Atidim; Cadets for Public Service attracts HU students
who plan to join Israel civil service upon graduation. Participants in the program, many of whom come from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds, demonstrate outstanding potential as future leaders and social entrepreneurs.
While in Washington, the cadets were introduced to many of the city’s famous landmarks, studied the inner workings of federal programs, and learned about America’s constitution.
