Close to 300 legal community members and attorneys from Southern California’s most successful and influential law firms came together at The Beverly Hills Hotel as AFHU presented the Harvey L. Silbert Torch of Learning Award to William Shernoff at the 2008 Law Society Dinner. In addition to recognizing his outstanding achievements as the pioneer of bad faith insurance law, this very special evening recognized Shernoff’s tenacity for helping Holocaust survivors retrieve the insurance policies their families purchased prior to the war that resulted in a $5 billion settlement to compensate victims for unpaid insurance benefits and slave labor. The dinner’s highlights included a compelling keynote address delivered by California Attorney General Jerry Brown and entertainment by The Three Waiters – a theatrical opera trio known for surprising unsuspecting guests with a “Three Tenors” style performance. The most poignant moment of the evening came as Shernoff paid tribute to the Holocaust Survivors he continues to represent who were present at the dinner. Proceeds from this year’s Law Society Dinner will help establish The Aharon Barak Center for Legal and Multidisciplinary Research Endowment Fund at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Faculty of Law.
