On December 12, 2007, at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Washington, DC, the American Friends of the Hebrew University bestowed its highest honor, The Scopus Award, on Morton and Norma Lee Funger of Maryland. This was presented by Robert H. Smith and Professor Menachem Magidor, President of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Prominent leaders in the Greater Washington, DC Jewish community, Mr. Funger is a past president of the AFHU Mid-Atlantic Region.
In attendance at the Gala Scopus Dinner were Washington area notables including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Maryland State Attorney General Douglas Gansler, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett and Israeli Ambassador Sallai Meridor and various real estate and business leaders. The keynote speaker of the evening was correspondent Marvin Kalb who spoke of the then recent peace talks in Annapolis. The gala dinner was chaired by C. Richard Beyda, with proceeds benefiting cancer research at The Hebrew University.
