AFHU and its Greater New York Region honored leading New York attorneys Jay B. Kasner, partner at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, LLP, and Andrew J. Levander, partner at Dechert LLP, with its prestigious George A. Katz Torch of Learning Award (TOL). The January 28 TOL luncheon held at Cipriani in New York City drew more than 600 guests and raised funds for The Law Clinics for Social Responsibility at Hebrew University's Faculty of Law. AFHU president Martin E. Karlinsky greeted guests, and Greater New York Region president, Pamela Emmerich, introduced luncheon keynote speaker, The Honorable Ambassador Gabriela Shalev, Israel’s 14th permanent representative to the United Nations. Ambassador Shalev is a Hebrew University alumna and former Hebrew University professor of law. Co-chairs of the Torch of Learning Award Luncheon were: Michael B. Brenner, I. Scott Bieler, Robert J. Jossen, Brad S. Karp, Judith S. Kaye, Peter Lieb, William F. Lloyd, Scott D. Musoff, Gary P. Naftalis, John F. Savarese and Mary Jo White. The George A. Katz Torch of Learning Award is presented annually to a distinguished member or members of the legal community in recognition for outstanding leadership, scholarship and dedication to society. The award is given to those who uphold the ideals that were embodied by the late philanthropist George A. Katz, co-founder of Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, and friend AFHU.
