The Mandel Institute of Jewish Studies was established during Hannukah in 1924, a few months before the official opening of the Hebrew University. It is the world’s largest and most important center of Jewish studies. Download HU's Jewish Studies Brochure.

The Mandel Institute:

• Houses important collections of books and texts, including The Bible Project, which researches the textual tradition of the Hebrew Bible.
• Created The Orion Center for dedicated study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, particularly as physical artifacts - most recently in the area of DNA analysis.
• Conducts more than 50 current specialized research projects spanning all aspects of Biblical and contemporary Jewish studies.
• Documents and preserves Jewish art, artifacts and synagogue architecture in regions of Serbia, Austria, Armenia and Greece.
• Is home to the Scholion Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, which reinforces HU’s stature as a leading participant in Jewish studies research in Israel and abroad.
