Help Us Foster Hebrew University's Excellence

End_Of_Year_Support_Letter_vista.jpg

Dear American Friend,

I know that you have many demands on your generosity, especially right
now. That's why your support as a American Friend of The Hebrew
University means so much.
Thank you for everything you have helped us
to achieve.
We cherish your involvement with AFHU and The Hebrew
University of Jerusalem
.

Hebrew University's accomplishments remain exceptional, contributing to
Israel's strength and research excellence.  In the past seven years,
seven HU alumni and faculty have received Nobel Prizes. In 2009,
HU graduate Dr. Ada Yonath, a former scholarship student, was
named co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

In addition to Dr. Yonath's Nobel Prize, five young HU researchers were
recently awarded competitive European Union grants reserved for
top young scientists.
The Hebrew University, more than any other
educational institution in Israel, serves as an incubator for Israel's
scientific and scholarly leadership, resulting in advances like these:

  • A groundbreaking discovery about a gene mutation responsible for a
fast-moving form of Alzheimer's disease. This knowledge is key to
developing an effective new approach to treating Alzheimer's.
  • An important discovery about the how the human body secretes
insulin, opening the way to better treatment for diabetes.

  • Innovative research about how nerve connections are formed in the central nervous system -- a dramatic step toward repairing brain damage.

  •  The creation of the EyeQ Chip, a processing system that analyzes
signals from car-mounted cameras to warn drivers of potential
    road hazards
, developed by MobileEye. The 2008 BMW 5 and 7
Series are among the vehicles using this life-saving technology.

  • The development of BriefCam, a technique that allows security
officers to review 24 hours of video recordings in less than a minute,
    dramatically improving security systems.

  • Vital new means of breeding edible fish in non-polluting ponds.
These innovative techniques are being shared with people in
    developing nations.
These are just a sampling of the myriad achievements emerging from
Hebrew University, which is why
I urge you to lend your invaluable
support today
. The Hebrew University must attract and provide
resources for the best and the brightest faculty and students in order
remain Israel's powerhouse and a top-100 ranked university worldwide.

Hebrew University is extraordinarily special. It is more than a center of
science, medicine, technology and agriculture. It is more than a center
for Jewish Studies, the Humanities and Social Sciences. It is truly unique
in its aspirations and achievements.  At the Rothberg International
School
, students from 50 countries around the world enjoy a multicultural
experience, as they broaden their intellectual horizons and develop a
deeper appreciation for Israel as a light among nations
.

At the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of
Peace, people from all backgrounds and walks of life are brought together
to facilitate dialogue and co-existence.

Please make a gift today that fosters the strength of Hebrew University
and Israel.  The needs are acute.

  • Scholarships and fellowships: Many promising Israeli students can't
afford to stay in school without financial aid. Investing in Israel's
    intellectual talent reaps enormous rewards.
  • Stellar faculty: More than 25% of Israeli academics teach outside
Israel, many of them at the world's leading universities. We want to
help bring some of these major talents back to Israel, where they
would prefer to teach and conduct research.
  • State-of-the-art laboratories and facilities: HU's research
infrastructure must be comparable to that of other top universities.
American Friends can help Hebrew University to be "state-of-the-art,"
    and equipped for future progress.

These may be ambitious goals for hard times. But with your support,
AFHU can continue helping Hebrew University to fulfill its role as a
beacon unto the nations and for the Jewish people.

Please give generously today.  Visit www.afhu.org/donate to make
a donation or contact one of our regional offices.

Sincerely,
