The Hebrew University has launched a unique initiative: "Open House on Wheels," whose goal is to encourage potential candidates from the periphery to register for studies at the Hebrew University.
In the initiative, a special bus of the university is going to outlying communities in order to reach potential students, to present to them the programs of the university, and to assist them in evaluating their prospects for acceptance. The first community visited was Kiryat Gat. Watch video
Kiryat Gat Mayor Aviram Dahari said, “We hope that this will not be a one-time effort. We in Kiryat Gat are making an effort to encourage quality students to go on to academic studies.”
Minister of Communications Moshe Kahalon, who was in Kiryat Gat for the project launch, said to the university representatives: “I don’t know if you are aware of the significance of this initiative of yours – to expose the university in this way to additional sectors of the population.”
Vice President and Director-General of the Hebrew University Billy Shapira said that “statistics of the university show that only 6 percent of all our students come from the south, and this is only about half of those who have the potential to go on to higher education. We initiated this project in order to increase the accessibility of the university to potential candidates and to bring academia to them.”
