More than 100 guests gathered at the Hilton Chicago to attend AFHU Midwest Region’s academic conference, Sustaining the World: A Day of Dialogue, which showcased the latest Hebrew University achievements.

Hebrew University Rector, Prof. Sarah Stroumsa opened the conference with an overview of Israel’s Role in Sustaining the World. Professor Isaiah “Shy” Arkin described the collaborative nature of Israeli scientific research and its contributions to the development of knowledge in his presentation, New Frontiers of Medical Science.
In discussing Israel’s Role in Creating a Sustainable Environment, Prof. Rony Wallach described the complexity of sustainability and noted that research is the driving force for Israel’s development.
Prof. Reuven Hazan analyzed the Politics of a Sustainable Peace and commented, “Israel is currently more united than it has been in 14 years. It just has no one to partner with.”
Ambassador Gabriela Shalev, former professor at The Hebrew University Faculty of Law, was the luncheon speaker. Amb. Shalev spoke of the State of Israel’s efforts in creating alliances and sharing Israel’s expertise with developing nations.
Midwest Region Board member, Deborah Borenstein, spoke of the conference, “People really enjoyed hearing about the exciting things that are happening in Israel. This is the core of what we are doing, sharing with the world the forward-looking accomplishments of The Hebrew University.”
