The Selim and Rachel Benin School of Computer Science and Engineering

World-renowned for excellence in broad spectrum research, The Benim School’s elite cadre of researchers focuses on engineering-oriented aspects of computers and computing, specifically in software, hardware, theory, and applications.

The School merges solid theoretical tradition with active investment of its intellectual power toward solving Israel's critical shortage of engineers. It promotes cross-disciplinary research and teaching in areas ranging from computational neuroscience to electronic commerce, machine learning and computer-aided surgery.  It was the first school in Israel to offer a program in computer science and computational biology, while its joint program in engineering and appoied science has trained some of Israel's most sucessful high-tech leaders.  Benin School researchers also harness computers to improve human welfare.

Sample Accomplishments:

• Video Synopsis software - a proprietary image-processing technology that creates a summary of original full length surveillance video. The synopsis is made possible by simultaneously presenting multiple objects, events and activities that occurred at different times. The technology is licensed to Israeli start-up BriefCam.
• The EyeQ Chip, a low-cost, single automotive camera that alerts drivers to potentially dangerous situations and activates safety measures automatically (developed by MobilEye).
• Pioneered a minimally invasive therapy that destroys cancer cells with electrical impulses
• Developed life-saving technology whereby medical imaging data are uploaded to cell phones and analyzed in real time by a remote computer
• Publication of lead research in prestigious journals and disseminated at conferences
• Winning competitive research grants in Israel and abroad
• Collaborating on research projects with scientists from other countries
• Hosting numerous internationally famed investigators, as well as brilliant postdoctoral fellows
• Having two faculty members that were awarded the most prestigious prizes in Computer Science (the Turing Award) and in Theoretical Computer Science (the Nevanlinna Prize)
